After those few minutes are up, however, your lack of depth makes continued interaction with anyone less shallow than you an impossibility. You are surrounded by friends who share your numbness. You feel like an insider because you "get" the wave of ironic-yet-wistful nostalgia that is employed by advertisers and reality-television programmers, without fully realizing that it exists because (and proves the fact that) there are millions upon millions of people who are just like you.
